From an early age I have always been involved in sports, whether it was swimming, basketball, athletics or working out in the gym. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I worked out but was never really sure what I should or shouldn’t be doing in the gym and so my workouts were not as focused as they would have previously been. Then when Éabha arrived, I found that I had no time to work out, as I was a stay-at-home mum living in California with no family or support network.
I was so lucky to find a nearby buggy fitness group where I could take time out for me. The workouts were given by instructors who understood what a new mum was going through both physically and emotionally, and each workout included exercises which were appropriate for my postpartum body. The buggy fitness group gave me the opportunity to work out while still having my baby with me and more importantly, meet other mums and their babies. Having lived in the States for only a couple of years and having a limited number of friends there who had babies, meeting other parents and building a circle of friends with whom I could connect, to share my stories, my worries, laughs, etc., of being a first-time mum, was so important for me.
I loved the group so much and their dedication to the fitness and wellbeing of new mums and mums-to-be that when my maternity leave came to an end (I am a qualified tax consultant), I qualified with Fit4Mom® as a pre and post-natal fitness instructor and began coaching. I was so lucky to learn and benefit from the experience of some of the most qualified pre and post-natal fitness instructors in the U.S.
When I taught buggy fitness classes my daughters would come with me as I think it’s so important to teach children from an early age the importance of being healthy and keeping fit. When people ask me ‘what do you miss about the states?’ - other than the weather of course 😊, my answer every time is the fitness group and the amazing people I met through it!
When we moved back to Ireland in 2018, I knew I wanted to continue coaching women and so optiMum fitness was established.
My passion is to help women of all ages and stages of life feel strong, empowered and healthy on the inside and out. I want to take away the guess work and uncertainty for women around exercising during pregnancy or the newly postpartum period. I want to help women move more, connect with other women, make new friends, chat and laugh together in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.
